I bought four of the Taig adapters for use as tool holders with my Sherline lathe and mill. These adapters have one problem. The threads are recessed into the nut so that you only get about 1-1/2 threats that engage the head stock's threads before the base of the adapter contacts the base of the head stock mount. I don't think that is enough.

The ways of the head are much larger and beefier than the Sherline head and the mass of the head is significantly higher. When used with a good cobalt boring bar, the Criterion head is a VAST improvement over the Sherline head. Boring on the mill is not difficult, although it is a skill like most things.

At some point, when you have a mill running, you need to make a boring bar holder for your lathe. You can see an example of the post I made for my Sherline in this article. You are going to find that the Sherline lathe can bore really, really accurate holes. I've been using this lathe for a long time and I'm still amazed at how accurate it is.

Does any one have plans for a small boring head that I could build to use on my Taig or Sherline mills? I have the Sherline boring head but I find it difficult to work with and there is quite a bit of flex in the body and the HSS tool. If either the Taig or the Sherline lathe fit your projects, budget, and space, both will do a good job. I prefer the Sherline lathe as the motor comes attached and has speed control included. Stick with fine pitch roughing end mills on the Sherline mill. The Sherline boring head is okay but it is very light duty and has a limited range. I prefer a small Criterion head and like the S-1-1/2A. Very precise and bulletproof. It takes 3/8" shank bars. For boring bars, I suggest the 3/8" shanked HSS/cobalt sets.
